Let's clear one thing up first: eloping doesn't mean skipping the rules. In Ireland, a legal marriage is a legal marriage — the 3-month notice, the registered solemniser, the two witnesses all still apply, whether you invite 200 people or nobody at all.
What eloping changes isn't the paperwork. It's the day. Small. Quiet. Yours. And for a lot of queer couples, that's the whole appeal — a day with nobody to perform for, no seating plan built around who does and doesn't approve. Just the two of you, someone to marry you, and someone to catch it on camera.
So here's the honest version: the dreamy part and the part nobody puts on the mood board. Both matter, and knowing both is what makes the day actually happen.
01 · The ideaWhat eloping means now
Forget the old picture — running off in secret, telling nobody, a bit of a scandal. That's not what this is anymore.
Today an elopement is a choice, not an escape. It's a spectrum:
- Just the two of you — plus a solemniser and two witnesses (the legal minimum). Nobody else.
- A tiny handful — sometimes called a micro-wedding. Your closest few, usually under ten or fifteen people.
It's not about hiding your marriage. It's about scale. You're not shrinking the love — you're cutting everything that isn't it.
02 · The truthThe legal bit still counts
This is the part that surprises people. An elopement in Ireland is a full legal marriage, so the same rules apply as any wedding:
- The 3-month HSE notice. You must notify a HSE Civil Registration Service in person, and the clock counts from your appointment date — not the day you book. This applies to every legal marriage, elopement or not.
- A registered solemniser. The person marrying you has to be on the official Register of Solemnisers — civil, religious or secular. If they can't legally sign your form, the day isn't a marriage, however beautiful it feels.
- Two witnesses, both 18 or older, present on the day and signing with you.
- The MRF. The Marriage Registration Form is the one document that makes it legal. No MRF, no marriage. You get it from the registrar after your notice.
None of this is scary — it's admin, not a test. We walked through every step, document by document, in our HSE 3-month notice guide. The one thing to take from it: book your notification early. Appointments fill up months ahead, and you can't marry a single day before the 3 months are up.
eloping changes the guest list, not the law.
02 · A verdadeO legal continua valendo
- A MRF.
03 · The pullWhy queer couples choose it
Plenty of couples elope. But for queer couples, a few reasons hit differently:
- Nobody to perform for. No managing the relative who "supports you, but…". No reading the room. The day is only for people who are all the way in — or for no one but you two.
- Total control. Your vows, your names, your pronouns, your music, no compromise negotiated with family expectations. Nothing watered down.
- Budget. A small day costs a fraction of a big one. That money can become a honeymoon, a deposit, or just staying out of debt.
- Intimacy. When it's tiny, the day is actually about the two of you — not a logistics project you barely remember.
And it doesn't have to be either/or. Some couples do the small legal day now and throw a big party later — or never. There's no rule that says the marriage and the celebration happen on the same afternoon.
03 · O que atraiPor que casais queer escolhem
Muita gente faz elopement.
04 · The honest partWhere you can actually do it
Here's the dream: a cliff over the Atlantic, a quiet forest, a mountain with nobody around. Here's the truth: the legal ceremony has location rules, and a random clifftop usually isn't one of them. But there's more room than you'd think — you just need to know which route you're on.
What the law allows
- Civil ceremony — held at the registrar's office, or at a venue the local registrar has approved after an inspection (usually an extra fee, around €70–100). It can't just be anywhere outdoors.
- Secular / Humanist ceremony — this is the flexible one. A Humanist Association of Ireland celebrant can marry you anywhere publicly accessible with a postal address or an identifiable landmark. That opens up beaches, gardens, and many outdoor spots. A private home closed to the public doesn't qualify.
- Religious ceremony — Spiritualist Union and Interfaith ministers can often officiate outdoors too, at other venues.
So, two real routes to your dream backdrop
- Book a Humanist, Spiritualist or Interfaith solemniser who can legally marry you at a publicly-accessible outdoor spot. The ceremony itself happens where you dreamed.
- Do the legal ceremony simply — a quick registrar-office marriage with your two witnesses — then have your real celebration and photos wherever you want. Nobody regulates where you pop the champagne or stand for the pictures.
Either way, you get the view. Just decide which route you're on before you fall in love with a location.
05 · The catchThe two-witness question
Here's the one that catches elopers out. You legally need two witnesses, both 18 or older, present and signing the register on the day. So if it's truly just the two of you… who signs?
- Your photographer and your celebrant's companion. Very common for small elopements — the people already there do it.
- Two friends you bring along. They don't have to be family, and there's no rule they were invited to anything else.
- Ask around. Some venues or registrars can point you to willing witnesses if you're eloping far from home. Arrange it ahead — don't leave it to the day.
The witnesses don't need to give a speech or plan a thing. They just need to be there and sign. That's the whole job.
Our free anti-panic checklist takes your date and shows you the last moment to start each step — notice, solemniser, the lot. No email required.
Open the checklist →05 · A pegadinhaA questão das duas testemunhas
Abre o checklist →06 · The planHow to plan yours
- Pick a rough date first. Then book your HSE notification — 3 months is the legal minimum, so book earlier.
- Choose your ceremony type. Civil, secular or religious — this is what decides where you can legally stand (see section 04).
- Book your solemniser and check they're on the Register. This is the person who has to be free on your date.
- Sort your two witnesses. 18+, present, signing. Line them up early.
- Book someone to photograph or film it. An elopement is tiny and over fast — the photos are how you keep it and how you tell the people who weren't there.
- Decide the after. A dinner, a trip, a party months later, or nothing at all. There's no correct answer — only yours.
- Resolve as duas testemunhas. 18+, presentes, assinando. Combina cedo.
Quick recap — the whole thing in 5 lines
- Eloping ≠ skipping the law. 3-month notice, registered solemniser, two witnesses, MRF — all still apply.
- It's a scale, not a secret. Just the two of you, or a tiny handful.
- Location has rules. Humanist celebrants unlock most outdoor spots; or do the legal bit simply and celebrate anywhere.
- You still need two witnesses (18+). Your photographer and celebrant's companion often count.
- Book the notice early. Everything else is yours to shape.
